John Lennon
John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (* 9. Oktober 1940; † 8. Dezember 1980) war ein englischer Musiker und Liedermacher, der als eines der Gründungsmitglieder der Beatles, einer der kommerziell erfolgreichsten und von der Kritik gefeierten Bands in der Geschichte der populären Musik, zu Weltruhm gelangte. Zusammen mit seinem Beatle-Kollegen Paul McCartney bildete er eine der erfolgreichsten Songwriter-Partnerschaften des 20. Jahrhunderts.
Geboren und aufgewachsen in Liverpool, wurde Lennon als Teenager in die Skiffle-Bewegung involviert; seine erste Band, „The Quarrymen“, entwickelte sich 1960 zu „The Beatles“. Als sich die Gruppe gegen Ende des Jahrzehnts auflöste, begann Lennon eine Solokarriere, die zu den von der Kritik hochgelobten Alben „John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band“ und „Imagine“ sowie zu Kult-Songs wie „Give Peace a Chance“ und „Imagine“ führte. 1975 zog sich Lennon aus dem Musikgeschäft zurück, um sich seiner Familie zu widmen, tauchte aber 1980 mit einem neuen Album, „Double Fantasy“, wieder auf. Drei Wochen nach dessen Veröffentlichung wurde er von Mark Chapman ermordet.
Lennon zeigte in seiner Musik, seinen Schriften, seinen Zeichnungen, in Filmen und Interviews eine rebellische Natur und einen bissigen Witz und war durch sein politisches und friedenspolitisches Engagement umstritten. 1971 zog er nach New York City, wo seine Kritik am Vietnamkrieg zu einem langwierigen Versuch der Regierung von Richard Nixon führte, ihn des Landes zu verweisen, während seine Lieder von der Antikriegsbewegung als Hymnen aufgenommen wurden.
Bis 2010 verkaufte Lennon in den USA mehr als 14 Millionen Soloalben, und als Autor, Co-Autor oder Interpret ist er für 27 Nummer-eins-Singles in den US-Hot-100 verantwortlich. Im Jahr 2002 wurde er in einer BBC-Umfrage zu den 100 größten Briten auf den achten Platz gewählt, und 2008 stufte ihn der Rolling Stone als fünftgrößten Sänger aller Zeiten ein. Er wurde 1987 posthum in die „Songwriters Hall of Fame“ und 1994 in die „Rock and Roll Hall of Fame“ aufgenommen.
